				Kuala Lumpur, 31 March 2008 The BMW Short Film Competition call for entries ended on a high note, with 62 entries submitted from first-time Malaysian film makers on March 21. The short films received were from a diverse mix of Malaysians, ranging from students to amateur film makers in their late 40s who focused on a variety of genres, from drama to comedy to horror. For the first time, the BMW Shorties also received animation entries. Coming in from almost the entire country, the short films were shot in the varied languages and dialects of Malaysia including Mandarin, Cantonese, Tamil and Bahasa Malaysia. BMW Malaysia’s Press and Corporate Affairs Manager, Vijayaratnam Tharumartnam said: “This year’s competition saw a nearly all new line-up of competitors, with exciting and challenging entries. The Jury certainly has their work cut out for them.” The panel of judges, comprising renowned Filipino filmmaker Raymond Red, Cannes Film Festival 2000 Golden Palm winner for Best Short Film, Ida Nerina, award-winning actress, Tan Chui Mui, Malaysian indie cinema champion and last year’s winner Abdullah Zahir will review the entries on 11th and 12th of April to select the 10 finalists. The top 10 finalists for the BMW Shorties will be announced on www.bmwshorties.com.my on April 21 and members of the public can then vote for their favourite finalist. The entry with the most number of public votes will receive the BMW Shorties People’s Choice Award. This year’s BMW Shorties also introduces new categories such as Best Acting and Best Script. Voters will also have a chance to win invitations to the BMW Shorties Gala Premiere, which will now be held on May 14. The BMW Shorties is a competition that offers a prize of up to RM75, 000 in production assistance and mentorship to enable potential filmmakers to make a professional short film that in turn will have the chance to be showcased in international film festivals through the BMW Group’s global network. This year’s theme is “H2O,” a subject that is expected to showcase diverse thoughts and interpretations from the contestants. The competition is open to aspiring Malaysian filmmakers of 18 years and above, as long as they have never won in any local or international film festival, competition or awards. The short film entries will be judged on their originality, content and creativity in interpreting the theme.
