BMW Shorties 2008 short film competition deadline nears
14 days remain to submit your short film entry

Kuala Lumpur, 7 March 2008

There are only 14 days remaining for budding Malaysian directors to submit their short film to the BMW Shorties 2008 Short Film Competition.

The BMW Shorties 2008 is the second season of BMW Malaysia's annual short film competition launched in 2006 to champion talented individuals within the Malaysian cinematic community.

This year's competition provides an even stronger platform to showcase Malaysia's independent cinema scene. With a significantly increased grand prize of RM 75,000 in production assistance the BMW Shorties 2008 offers a tremendous opportunity for the winner to shoot a professional short film which will be showcased in Malaysia as well as at international film festivals through the BMW Group's global presence.

"The promise behind this program has never been just to realise the potential of talented new film makers but to create a platform from where short films can be appreciated by all Malaysians as a means of having their say and perhaps more importantly as a form of art" said BMW Malaysia's Press and Corporate Affairs Manager, Vijayaratnam Tharumartnam.

As part of its ongoing commitment to support the cinematic arts BMW Malaysia recently held the premiere of ‘Teddy & I' the first ever BMW Shorties production directed by BMW Shorties 2007 Award winner, Abdullah Zahir Omar. BMW Malaysia also recently held the BMW Shorties 2008 Judges Clinic which saw Filipino filmmaker and Palm D'Orr recipient Raymond Red, indie film champion Tan Chui Mui, actress Ida Nerina and Abdullah Zahir Omar sharing their experience in film making with aspiring directors from all over Malaysia.

"Teddy & I was a milestone for the BMW Shorties as it is irrefutable proof that given the opportunity Malaysian's are capable of making thoughtful and creative films while the Judges Clinic is an integral part of ensuring that the BMW Shorties is able to provide professional value to interested film makers. BMW Malaysia is both proud and gratified to be a part of Abdullah Zahir's success and we look forward to seeing what this years participants will have to offer" said Vijayaratnam Tharumartnam.

He added that since the launch of the BMW Shorties 2008 on January 22nd 2008, the public response to the competition has been tremendous with the BMW Shorties website, www.bmwshorties.com.my receiving more than 3,151 visitors from 34 countries which includes the United States, Germany, Australia, Russia, Canada and Norway.

The theme for this year's competition is "H2O," a subject that is expected to showcase diverse thoughts and interpretations from the contestants. The competition is open to aspiring Malaysian filmmakers of 18 years and above, as long as they have never won in any local or international film festival, competition or awards.

Short film entries will be judged on originality of idea, creativity in interpreting the theme, story telling ability, direction and emotional pull. Film school students and first-time film makers are encouraged to send in their short film entries for consideration. Deadline for entries is at 5pm on Friday, 21st March 2008.

The winning entry for this year's BMW Shorties will be announced at a premiere which will be held on April 24th, 2008. The premiere will also showcase the top 10 entries.

Members of the public will also be able to view the top 10 finalists' entries and cast their vote online for the People's Choice Award at www.bmwshorties.com.my
