Potential Filmmakers attend Sessions on Filmmaking at BMW Headquarters

Kuala Lumpur, 1 March 2008

In its continued effort in championing talents within the Malaysian Cinematic Arts community, BMW Malaysia Sdn Bhd today organised The BMW Shorties 2008 - Judges Clinic.

The Judges Clinic saw participants from various age groups and backgrounds converge at BMW Malaysia's Regional Training Centre in Cyberjaya for a day of learning sessions encompassing all fields of the filmmaking process from the judges of the BMW Shorties 2008.

Panel of judges sharing in Judges' Clinic

The panel of judges this year comprised of experienced and renowned professionals of the film industry, both in the local and international scene. Amongst the judges were Filipino filmmaker and Palm D'Orr recipient Raymond Red, indie film champion Tan Chui Mui, actress Ida Nerina and last years award winning BMW Shorties director, Abdullah Zahir Omar. All four judges shared their expertise and experience with the budding filmmakers about all areas of the film making industry.

Participants had a chance to get personal advice from the judges.

Participants were later divided into four groups where they were able to get personalised advice from the judges on their scripts and storyboards.

A film competition with a difference, the BMW Shorties aims at not merely discovering but also cultivating emerging cinematic talents in Malaysia by providing a distinguished panel of judges from the Malaysian Film Industry who will act as mentors to the eventual winner.

"When we launched the BMW Shorties late in 2006, we made a promise that this program was created to not only realise new film talent but to also educate and develop talent within the Malaysian cinematic arts community and the Judges Clinic today is a testament of our commitment to this initiative." said BMW Malaysia's Press and Corporate Affairs Manager, Vijayaratnam Tharumartnam.

He added that since the launch of the BMW Shorties 2008 on January 22nd 2008, the publics' responses to the BMW Shorties have been tremendous with the BMW Shorties website, www.bmwshorties.com.my receiving more than 3,151 visitors from 34 countries since going online.

The BMW Shorties winner is set to receive a prize of up to RM75,000 in production assistance to enable the person submitting the winning short film to further make a professional short film. This short film, in turn, will have the chance to be showcased at international film festivals through the BMW Group's global network.

This year's theme is "H2O," a subject that is expected to showcase diverse thoughts and interpretations from the contestants. The competition is open to aspiring Malaysian filmmakers of 18 years and above, as long as they have never won in any local or international film festival, competition or awards.

Short film entries will be judged on originality of idea, creativity in interpreting the theme, story telling ability, direction and emotional pull. Film school students and first-time film makers are encouraged to send in their short film entries for consideration. Deadline for entries is at 5pm on Friday, 21st March 2008.

The winning entry for this year's BMW Shorties will be announced at a premiere which will be held on April 24th, 2008. The premiere will also showcase the top 10 entries.

Members of the public will also be able to view the top 10 finalists' entries and vote for their choice online at www.bmwshorties.com.my
